Every meeting with Beşiktaş at the Haldun Alagaş Sports Hall carries a weight the league table alone cannot explain: the two sides play out the İstanbul Derbisi, and a handball season in the city is measured by how those games go before anything else is added to it.

Istanbul Gençlik's handball team plays in the Turkish Men's Handball Super League, sharing its name and colours with a club better known these days for the volleyball section it built around a squad bought from Milas. The handball side has stayed the quieter half of the operation, with no Super League or Turkish Cup title to its name and no run in European competition to point to. Its most recent Turkish Cup campaign ended at the preliminary round of the 2025–26 edition.

Home matches are played in Ümraniye, at a hall holding just under 2,500 people — a size that keeps the derby with Beşiktaş an intimate, close-quarters occasion rather than a distant one. It is that fixture, more than any honour on the shelf, that gives the club its identity on the Istanbul handball scene.
