In 2018, Denmark's players' union petitioned to have KIF Kolding declared bankrupt over unpaid salaries. A late settlement pulled the case back from the brink: the club managed to keep running. It was not enough to save the season — the team lost the relegation play-off to TM Tønder Håndbold and dropped into the 1st Division.
The trouble had been building since 2012, when the club merged with AG København under the name KIF Kolding København. Within a few years the finances had unravelled badly enough that the Danish Handball Federation put the club on its black list, barring new signings while debts piled up and players left.
KIF was founded in 1941 under chairman Th. Jepsen, and won the national championship fourteen times between 1987 and 2015 and added the Danish Cup in 1989, 1998, 2004, 2006 and 2013. Much of that run was fought out against GOG Håndbold, with the championship decided between the two sides so often from 1987 to 2009 that the fixture earned its own name, Klassikeren — the Classic.
