The same years produced Asian Games gold in 2002, 2006 and 2014, a stretch in which the team rarely left a continental tournament without a medal, silver in 1998, 2010 and 2022 among them.
The team's roots go back to a provincial side formed in South Pyongan in 1985 and an exhibition match played the following May. Its first recognised international came on 21 December 1989, against China at the AFC Women's Championship.
Kim Il Sung Stadium in Pyongyang, holding 50,000, has served as the main home ground.
That tournament is remembered for another reason: North Korea walked off the pitch before kick-off against Colombia after organisers displayed South Korea's flag instead of its own. The fixture against South Korea itself carries political weight well beyond the pitch, and games against Japan carry their own regional edge.
It has since qualified for 2027.
