Niger Tornadoes

Minna sits at the confluence road linking the north-west to Abuja, and for football purposes it has meant one club for close to five decades: Niger Tornadoes. The team took shape in 1977 and has stayed tied to the city since, playing out of the Bako Kontagora Stadium, a 5,000-seat ground.

The single trophy that defines the club's history is the 2000 Nigerian FA Cup, won with a 1–0 final victory over Enugu Rangers. It sent them into the following season's CAF Cup Winners' Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals. The NPFL title itself has never come to Minna; Tornadoes have built their record on staying in the division rather than topping it, dropping out in 2012 and earning their way back via the second-tier National League in 2015.

Two further FA Cup finals, in 2017 and 2019, both ended in defeat on penalties, against Akwa United and Kano Pillars respectively — near misses that never turned into a second title. Among the players who passed through Minna, Tijani Babangida stands out: he started his career at Tornadoes before going on to win Olympic gold with Nigeria in 1996.

Known to their own supporters as Ikon Allah, Tornadoes go by yellow and black. The most recent season followed the club's familiar pattern of survival football: they went to the final day of the 2024/2025 NPFL campaign needing something against Kano Pillars, won, and stayed up.
