Sumsel United

Sriwijaya FC has long owned Palembang's football weekends, and since 2025 it has had company: the Derby Sumatera now runs through a second club sharing the same city and the same ground, Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium. It exists because the Vice Governor of South Sumatra, Cik Ujang, bought the playing licence of the West Java club Persikas Subang and moved it to Palembang, ratified by the Indonesian Football Association on 6 June 2025. PT Cahaya Sumsel United holds the club.

The badge carries nine vertical lines for the Batanghari Sembilan, the nine rivers of South Sumatra, behind a hand gripping a fireball on a blue shield — the same blue that opens the kit list ahead of white and black. The nickname, Laskar Juaro, translates as Warriors of the Champions.

It has closed a step down: the club's under-19 side won the inaugural EPA Championship U-19, beating Persiku Kudus 3–2 in the final. Rachmad Hidayat captains a senior squad built with imports from Brazil, Argentina and Japan among them, and the bench work in the first season fell to Nil Maizar. The Sumsel United story so far is a young side's story, and it read as such: a fourth-place finish in Group 1 of their debut Championship campaign, the tier known until recently as Liga 2, closer to the promotion picture than to the bottom of the table but not yet through it.
