Vietnam had no women's national side to speak of before 1990, when the Vietnam Football Federation put one together from scratch — a 1997 fixture against Malaysia. What it built in the years after is now the standard the rest of Southeast Asia measures itself against: eight SEA Games gold medals, running from 2001 through 2019, 2021 and 2023, a run no other women's team in the region has matched.

The ASEAN Women's Championship has been less one-sided — three titles, in 2006, 2012 and 2019, against three runner-up finishes — but the rivalry that defines the team is with Thailand, against whom Vietnam have won 20 of 38 meetings. The furthest the side has reached outside the region came in 2022, a quarter-final finish at the AFC Women's Asian Cup that sent them to the 2023 FIFA World Cup. That tournament was a different proposition: three group games, three defeats, including a 7–0 loss to the Netherlands.

The team is built around Hanoi and plays its major fixtures at Mỹ Đình National Stadium. Mai Đức Chung, the coach who took them to that World Cup qualification and to SEA Games gold in 2021, has since given way to Hoàng Văn Phúc, though it is a player, not a coach, who carries the team's identity. Huỳnh Như, the captain, has scored 70 goals for Vietnam — more than anyone else who has worn the shirt — and it is her name that comes up first whenever the conversation turns to who got this team here.
