Arena 2000
Yaroslavl, Russia
Arena 2000 is owned by Russian Railways, though that is not obvious from the outside. Yaroslavl lost the bid but kept the arena. The venue has served as the home for the Kontinental Hockey League team HC Lokomotiv since its opening, even though the club has lost its entire roster once. On September 7, 2011, a plane crash killed every member of the squad, and the arena has carried the weight since. The record crowd for a hockey game is 9,097, set against Spartak Moscow in October 2008, but the capacity for pop music is smaller at 8,200. The first match was a 3-1 win over Lada Togliatti on the opening day.
The surface is artificial ice, and the stands are mostly empty when the team is not playing. The arena has not been rebuilt, and it does not need to be.
