There is something about the way the light sits in the hall at Čajkaréna in Olomouc. It is not a grand arena, but the space has a shape that refuses to be forgotten. The building stands on Čajkovského 68, tucked into the Nová Ulice district where the streets narrow and the city feels closer. It opened in the autumn of 2012, a modest project by the architects David Benda and Robert Štefka, built on a budget that kept the roof low and the windows bright.

The name tells you where it belongs. Čajkaréna sits next to the Gymnázia Čajkovského, a school with a long history. The hall grew out of the need for a proper court, not a spectacle. Inside, the parquet floor is polished and hard, marked with lines that mean more than geometry. The capacity is small enough that the noise stays inside. With 276 seats, or perhaps 240 if you count the standing room, everyone sees the same thing: the ball bouncing, the players working the channels, the coach shouting instructions that carry to every corner. It is intimate, which is not a word used lightly.

The hall does not host the heavyweights of European sport, but it is not idle. It is the home of BK Olomoucko, a basketball club that has seen better days and worse, and FBS Olomouc, the women’s floorball team. The players here work harder than they would in a bigger city. They cut defenders open at will because the space is tight and the defence is organized. When the Pohár Českého florbalu quarterfinal came to town in 2021, the crowd was small but the result was clear enough. The team lost 1:9, a scoreline that suggested the opposition had more depth. The women’s side later reached the final of the same cup in the 2024/2025 season, a run that felt like a victory in itself.

The architecture has its own quiet pride. In 2013, the building was a candidate for the Cena Rudolfa Eitelbergera, an award for architectural merit in the Olomouc region. It did not win, but the recognition stayed. The building is simple, functional, and honest. It does not pretend to be anything it is not. That is enough for those who come to watch the game, not the building.
