Estádio Mundunduleno

The stadium sits in the Mandengwe neighbourhood. It is not the only ground in Moxico Province, but it is the one used by FC Bravos do Maquis, a club that has played in the Girabola since its foundation in 1983. The pitch is natural grass; after heavy rain the surface can cut up. What sets this place apart is the name on its doors. It carries the title of Jones Kufuna Yembe, a guerrilla commander from eastern Angola, and the local word for the surrounding district. The capacity is small — four thousand or so. The stadium has not been left untouched by time. A major reconstruction in 2013 saw the club move its home games to Lunda Sul while the grounds were reworked. More recently, the grandstands took a knock after January rains, and a section collapsed, leaving the home supporters to play from the sidelines until repairs were completed. The rebuilding work was funded through a local sponsor, Sodiam, and the club’s management kept the project underway without fanfare. The highest turnout recorded here was for a women’s national championship final in 2008, when Progresso Sambizanga defeated GD Fagec 2–1. That crowd of two thousand was an unusual sight in a town where football is played on Sundays and not celebrated on weekdays. The stadium also hosted Angola Cup round of 16 ties, including a match against 1º de Maio, but those fixtures passed without leaving a lasting mark on the town itself.

Estádio Mundunduleno is not a showcase venue. It is a local pitch in a province that does not often see attention from the wider game. The stands are low, the roof is simple, and the grass is kept green through hard work rather than magic. When the sun drops behind the church tower in Mandengwe, the floodlights flicker on and the players take the field, knowing that this is where they belong.
