Fernando Buesa Arena
Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain
Formerly: Pabellón Araba
The arena has always been a bit of an outlier in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Built in 1975 as a Plaza del Ganado — a livestock market — it was converted into a sports pavilion in 1990. The provincial government took the idea and stripped out the stalls to create the Pabellón Araba , which became the home of Saski Baskonia.
A consortium known as UTE — consisting of Zikotz, Lagunketa, and Giroa — worked the channels to bring the seating up to 15,504 for basketball. That number stuck for a few years until the official capacity was revised upwards to 15,716.
It hosted the EuroLeague Final Four in 2019, which was a big night for the club.
In February 2000, the Pabellón Araba was renamed the Fernando Buesa Arena . Fernando Buesa was the president of the club before he was assassinated by ETA. The name change was a tribute, and the club have worn it ever since.
