Franz Guggenberger Sporthalle
Korneuburg, Austria
There is little to distinguish the Franz Guggenberger Sporthalle beyond its history as a former municipal bathhouse, but that past leaves a mark on the building’s character. The structure dates back to 1908, when it operated as the Tröpferlbad, a bathhouse for the town of Korneuburg. It was not until the post-war period, during the tenure of Mayor Franz Guggenberger, that the large sports hall was constructed within the existing framework. The facility remains under the operation of the Stadtgemeinde Korneuburg, the local municipality.
Inside, the space serves as a hub for multiple disciplines rather than a single sport. The synthetic floor, replaced in 2022 to enhance safety and shock absorption, hosts the women’s handball team Union heinekingmedia Korneuburg, who compete in the Austrian Women’s Handball League. Volleyball is equally present, with UNIONvolleys Bisamberg-Hollabrunn using the venue for their matches in the Austrian Volley League.
The capacity is modest, accommodating roughly 500 spectators. Recent updates include the installation of LED lighting in 2023, modernising the environment for evening fixtures.
