Hala Na Skarpie

The Szombierki district holds a hall that does not announce itself.

Visitors find a box built in a hurry. The contract was signed in 2009 and the doors were thrown open two years later; the project arrived at a site where an older hall had been pulled down in 2004.

Inside, the surface is hard, and the room is tall enough that a basketball shot must not hit the ceiling. Seating sits at one thousand, or perhaps 996, depending on who you ask; either way the difference is swallowed by the crowd.

It is not a football ground, and it does not pretend to be one.

Poland took on Brazil on its indoor hard court for the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs in 2021, a tie that passed through the air-conditioned air without leaving a mark on the history books. The same floor has seen boxing matches, a rap concert that brought local names into the dressing room, and a model festival that could have been held in any city with enough space.

BS Polonia Bytom plays basketball here, and the Szombierki Boxing Academy trains its fighters next to the basketball court, though the two do not meet. The hall belongs to OSiR Bytom, which manages it as a place for sport and recreation rather than a monument to either.

There is no crowd that stays long, because there is nowhere to go after the final whistle or the last point. A visitor who comes for a handball match leaves through the same door they arrived at, and the wind outside does not follow them in.
