Happiness Arena
Nagasaki, Japan
Happiness Arena sits where the old shipyard once stood, in the Sachiyo-cho district of Nagasaki.
There are two lights that hang heavy over the court, and when they are switched on they cut the dark. The stands are not made of concrete tiers but of retractable seats that slide back when the place is not needed for sport. It can take 6,000 visitors or shrink to 1,000, depending on whether the city is expecting a game or a concert.
Nagasaki Velca play here in the B.LEAGUE, and sometimes Hisaishi Springs use the floor for volleyball. The arena is part of a larger complex that cost nearly ¥100 billion to build, paid for by Japanet Holdings. The name Happiness Arena was chosen for its simplicity.
