HWS AWFiS Gdańsk

The HWS AWFiS is not a stadium in the traditional sense. It is an indoor hall tucked into the Oliwa district of Gdańsk. This venue is defined by its proximity to the Jędrzej Śniadecki Academy of Physical Education and Sport. The building sits quietly at ul. Kazimierza Górskiego 1.

The facility opened its doors in December 1972. While the academy itself traces its lineage back to 1952, this specific hall was constructed to serve the growing needs of student athletics. The interior holds 1,500 seats. The number is precise, though it may fluctuate depending on whether barriers are set up for safety or removed for comfort during less crowded events. The surface beneath the players is artificial turf, chosen for durability and ease of maintenance rather than the aesthetic appeal of natural grass. It is a surface that demands respect for its consistency, not its beauty.

For years, the hall has been the home of Torus Wybrzeże Gdańsk, a handball club that plays within these walls while the city’s football teams look elsewhere. The atmosphere is different here. There are no floodlights that blind the night sky, no towering masts to swallow the sound. The acoustics are contained, the noise bouncing off high ceilings and concrete walls. It is a place where the game is played close to the fans, where a missed pass is heard more clearly than in a larger arena.

What makes this ground unique is its connection to education. Every match played here is under the banner of a university. The players are students and professionals alike, and the spectators are often people who know the names on the shirts from lectures or training sessions.
