The space inside John Cain Arena is defined by the curve of the velodrome track, which sits hidden beneath the basketball floor. When the wood panels are laid down, the circular ribs of the cycling path disappear, leaving a flat hardwood court for the National Basketball League teams. This dual purpose dictates the seating arrangement. The lower bowl follows the banking of the track, bringing the crowd closer to the action than the upper tiers.

In the photographs, the arena appears as a vast, open structure with a distinctive truss roof that spans the width of the building. The lighting rigs hang heavy from this framework, casting a focused glow on the blue or green playing surface during tennis matches. The boundary boards display a busy array of sponsorship logos, including KIA and GE Money, which line the court perimeter. Above the stands, a large digital scoreboard hangs suspended, visible from every angle in the crowd.

The venue has shifted its identity several times over the years. It opened as the Melbourne Park Multi-Purpose Venue before taking the name Vodafone Arena, then Hisense Arena, and later Melbourne Arena. The current name, John Cain Arena, was adopted in December 2020, honouring a former Victorian Premier. This renaming reflects a long history of commercial partnerships within the Melbourne Park precinct.

While primarily known for basketball, the space also hosts major netball fixtures and tennis events. The Australian Open uses the facility when the main stadium is unavailable or during qualifying rounds. The atmosphere here is different from the outdoor courts; the enclosed nature traps the sound of the crowd, creating a more intimate environment for spectators. The transition from a cycling track to a sporting arena is visible in the way the seats are arranged, curving around the central court rather than pointing directly at a pitch.
