Kalnapilio Arena
Panevėžys, Lithuania
Kalnapilio Arena replaced the Sports Palace Aukštaitija. The building opened for business in 2008, costing 32 million EUR to bring into existence.
The defining feature of this space is not the basketball court, but the track that runs around it. It houses a 250-metre indoor velodrome, the only covered cycling track in the Baltic States. It hosted the 2012 European Track Championships and later served as a stop on the 2021 UCI Track Champions League. Seating shifts with the discipline: 5,600 seats are arranged for basketball, but the configuration changes for cycling events, dropping to 3,100.
It sits on Parko g. 12, a location that separates it from the city centre and its older football grounds. The capacity for basketball has remained static since the opening, though concerts can draw a larger crowd, with 7,000 spectators filling the space. The record attendance for a match inside sits at 7,013, set during a game between Lietkabelis and Žalgiris in June 2017.
It is a venue built for speed and spectacle, but it does not host the local football club, FK Panevėžys, which plays at the Aukštaitijos stadionas nearby. That ground opened in 1965 and was renovated in 2019, carrying a different history entirely.
