LDS "Olymp-Arena"
Kirovo-Chepetsk, Russia
The LDS "Olymp-Arena" does not look like a conventional ice palace.
Construction on the site began in 1992, but the facility did not materialize for nearly two decades. Following a contest that rejected names like "Chepetsky Aleksandrit," the venue was finally christened the "Olymp-Arena" before its official opening on November 20, 2010. The eventual completion provided the city with a permanent home for its ice sports.
The building accommodates a 60x26 metre ice surface, which is standard for professional hockey, but the surrounding infrastructure is somewhat more extensive. It includes a press center and a cafe. The seating capacity is modest, holding 1,800 spectators, which makes it one of the smaller venues in the Supreme Hockey League (VHL). Despite the limited size, the arena has seen sellouts during critical playoff matches.
