Izhstal Ice Palace

The Izhstal Ice Palace presents a different face to the city depending on the time of year.

The ammonia refrigeration system keeps the surface hard, a legacy of the original 1970s construction that has since been sealed and modernised. A major reconstruction began in 2022, replacing the old roof and sealing the thermal envelope to stop the heat from escaping. The project aimed to increase seating to 4,291, though later reports suggested a post-renovation capacity of around 3,000 to improve comfort and safety. Historic mosaic panels from the 1970s were preserved or restored during this work, keeping the past visible in the new structure.

The venue has been home to HC Izhstal since its opening. The completion date was delayed from 2024 to late 2025, and finally to the first half of 2026. Local fans remember when the stands were consistently full during the 2014–2015 VHL playoffs, with attendance often exceeding the official seated count due to standing room or overflow, particularly during the Bratina Cup final series against Toros Neftekamsk.

The building also hosts figure skating events and concerts, including performances by the group Ruki Vverh! in May 2021 and ice shows by Evgeni Plushenko. These events fill the space when the hockey season is not in progress, keeping the facility active year-round. The Autonomous Institution of the Udmurt Republic manages the venue, overseeing both the main arena and the temporary home for the local team.
