The Pabellón Municipal Pitiu Rochel sits in the Sant Blai district, tucked within a sports complex rather than standing as a landmark on its own. The building’s most striking feature is its roof structure, visible in photographs, where translucent polycarbonate panels replace older sections to flood the court with daylight. Beneath this framework, the hall presents a sharp contrast: the court is surrounded by grey walkways and white walls.

The space is utilitarian, designed for spectators who come to watch handball. The venue holds 1,868 fans, a number that felt larger when the parquet floor was still in place. The renovation, completed in 2024, stripped away the old wooden surface to make way for the modern synthetic material, a change that required a budget of €2.5 million for structural repairs and thermal insulation. An elevator now connects the different levels, a necessary addition for accessibility in a building that opened in 1974.

The hall is named after Pitiu Rochel, a player and coach who defined the local scene before the current club, Horneo BM Alicante, took residence. The team plays in the Liga ASOBAL, the top tier of Spanish handball, and the arena hosts their matches under this bright, artificial sky. It also prepared to host the 2026 Copa del Rey de Balonmano Final Four, a tournament that will bring teams from across the country into this quiet neighbourhood. The venue is not alone in its purpose; it shares the complex with other facilities, but the main hall remains the focus.
