Pais Arena
Jerusalem, Israel
Formerly: Jerusalem Arena, HaArena Yerushalayim
It sits back from the road, half-hidden behind the dry scrub and the low walls of the Malha Sports Complex.
The card says it opened in 2014, but that is a number without weight. What matters is what it holds. Inside, the floor is parquet, not grass, and that is a detail you notice before you hear the ball bounce. The crowd that turned out for the Maccabiah Games final was larger than the usual basketball crowd, and the noise went up into the rafters.
There is a crack in one of the steel fins, a small weathering that no one has patched. A fan pointed it out to me after the game, as if it were a scar that told a story. The rest of the place is clean, the concrete smooth, the light from the floodlights reflecting off the polished surface. It is not a temple of sport, but it is a place where the city gathers when it wants to be inside, away from the wind and the dust of the streets. The website is there, but the arena speaks for itself.
