RAC Arena
Perth, Australia
Formerly: Perth Arena
The blue steel ribs that cradle the RAC Arena entrance are the first thing a visitor sees. They look like the framework of a ship, or something built for a storm. The building itself is a series of sharp angles and glass triangles, reflecting the Perth sky rather than simply standing against it. It is a structure that announces its presence before you pass through the turnstiles.
Inside the perimeter of those bright blue supports, the ground is paved in dark grey tiles that stretch right up to the glass doors. There are no queues here, just the orderly lines of white stanchions waiting for crowd control. Above the turnstiles, a digital banner stretches across the width of the entrance, advertising the arrival of the Perth Wildcats. The sign is yellow and blue, matching the exterior of the building, and tells the public that the team will be coming in January.
The architecture of the arena is not about camouflage; it is about visibility. The roof structure is visible from the outside, a complex lattice of beams that suggests a large space inside. The entrance area feels open, exposed to the street and the city beyond. It is a modern building in a city that has grown around it, not the other way
