Sollentuna Sporthall
Sollentuna, Sweden
Inside this hall, the Swedish Floorball Federation staged a match that mattered more than the result. They needed recognition from the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF), so they invited Finland to play the sport’s first international indoor game. The match took place here, and the hosts won heavily. The stunt worked, and the game began to take root in the country. Today, the floor hosts handball and basketball, but that night was about something else.
Things came to a head with the local volleyball club. Sollentuna Volleybollklubb (SVK) has won more league titles than any other club in the country, yet they spend much of their week playing here rather than in their own arena. The hall offers a different kind of pressure. It is smaller, and the players can feel the crowd closer. When the away end never stopped, the noise bounces off the walls differently here than it would in a purpose-built arena.
A plaque in the town square tells a different story, one about a marathon runner from Japan who arrived late to the 1912 Games. That man walked through the streets to reach the old stadium, but this hall was not built then. It opened in the early seventies, replacing older wooden floors with modern facilities. It serves the community today, a place for youth matches and division games. It is not a landmark for tourists, but it is where the local teams hold every card when they meet.
