Spark Arena
Auckland, New Zealand
Formerly: Vector Arena, Auckland City Arena
Spark Arena sits in the Auckland waterfront precinct. The geometry changes. The floor is a flat, sealed surface that takes a basketball court or a concert stage without fuss. What sets this place apart from an outdoor stadium is the lack of weather. The architects Peddle Thorp and Crawford Architects worked with structural engineers Holmes Consulting Group to create a structure that does not lean toward one sport. The general contractor was Mainzeal, and the cost was roughly NZ$94.8 million. The venue opened on March 24, 2007, and has hosted everything from the New Zealand Breakers to Linkin Park. The highest attendance was 12,736 for a concert, while the sporting record sits at 10,025 for a UFC event. It was originally planned as Auckland City Arena before becoming Vector Arena, and finally Spark Arena in 2017. The name is less important than the function. The arena holds every card it is given, whether it is a tournament or a touring act. The lights come up, the seats fill, and the floor takes the game or the show. When it is empty, the space is quiet and vast, a shell waiting for the noise to return.
