Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou
Nouadhibou, Mauritania
The Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou sits on the Boulevard Maritime. It was not always this size. For many years it was a smaller venue, but the space between the stands and the sea remained the same.
The difference now is the scale. A renovation project completed in early 2021 transformed the ground. The Mauritanian military engineering corps worked alongside foreign specialists to raise the capacity to roughly 10,300 seats. This was not a cosmetic fix; it was a structural shift designed to host international fixtures. The FIFA Forward programme funded the work, which included laying down a new artificial turf pitch.
The stadium’s profile was raised significantly when it served as one of the host venues for the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. It hosted the opening match between Mauritania and Cameroon, a game that set the tone for the tournament. Later, it saw the quarter-final clash between Morocco and Tunisia. These matches brought attention to a town that had previously operated mostly under the radar of continental football.
FC Nouadhibou and ASC Snim use this ground as their home. The artificial surface is a practical choice for the region, allowing play to continue even when the weather turns rough. There is no official record of the highest attendance, but the empty seats during a weekday match are a different story from the packed stands during the U-20 tournament. The stadium has kept its original name, without sponsorship additions that often clutter such facilities elsewhere.
It is a functional building, built by military engineers and consultants, designed to bring international standards to a remote corner of Mauritania. When the sun sets over the harbor, the floodlights turn on, and the game begins on a surface that is becoming more common in African football, but here, it feels distinct because of the location.
