Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet
Monastir, Tunisia
Formerly: Stade de Monastir, Stade Olympique de Monastir
The main stand at the Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet is a single, unbroken block of concrete and painted metal. It rises in a straight line from the advertising hoardings, its white facade broken only by vertical stripes of blue paint. Above that, a long, flat roof extends over the tiered seating, sheltering rows of plain concrete benches. The structure is functional and unadorned, a standard sample of civic architecture that has seen better days.
Along the perimeter of the pitch, the advertising boards display a mix of sponsors that have been rearranged and updated over the years. The pitch itself is a rectangle of natural grass, cut short and marked with white lines. It is surrounded by a red running track, which separates the playing field from the spectator areas. This track, along with the multiple stands visible in the wider shots, indicates the stadium's original purpose as a multi-purpose athletics venue before it became dedicated almost entirely to football.
The ground is most famous for its role during the 2004 African Cup of Nations, hosted by Tunisia. It was during this tournament that Nigeria, featuring Jay-Jay Okocha, defeated both Cameroon and Mali in crucial knockout games. The stadium has also become a temporary home for the Libyan national team following instability in their own country, hosting matches against Tanzania and the DR Congo.
Today, the venue is the home of US Monastir. Recent renovations have focused on the administrative areas—changing rooms and the mixed zone—rather than the seating itself. The capacity remains around 20,000, a figure that has not changed significantly since the expansions in the early 2000s. It is a quiet place on match days, a concrete bowl that holds the history of the local club and the national team interchangeably.
