The arena sits in the Tjensvoll district of Stavanger. It is not a single-purpose venue, which gives it a quiet, working-day rhythm.
Stavanger Idrettshall opened in 1979 and has kept its name ever since, a long run for a Norwegian sports venue. It holds 4,100 spectators. Viking Håndball and Stavanger Håndball merged their elite efforts in 2022 and now share the hall, while SIF Håndball uses the space for training and lower-tier fixtures.
The hall has hosted top-level competitions: Group A matches of the 1999 Women's World Handball Championship and the 2008 European Men's Handball Championship both played out under its roof. The annual Vestcup volleyball tournament, organized by KFUM Stavanger since 1987. It has also seen cultural events — a Nordic folk dance festival in 2000 and a Chinese concert in 2001 — but the main flow remains sport.
It was initially planned to host up to 8,000 spectators for the Women's Euro 2020, but the tournament moved to Trondheim.
