Stadion Maksimir opened on 5 May 1912, and has not changed its name since. The local club HAŠK cut the turf; GNK Dinamo Zagreb, which plays there today, has been the primary tenant for most of the stadium's century.

Not every renovation is worth a sentence. The 1948 rebuild followed the Second World War and restored what damage the conflict had done. The 1998 project replaced the northern stand. The 2011 renovation was the most thorough: the pitch received under-soil heating and automatic watering, the seats were replaced, and a blue athletics track was laid around the perimeter. The track is artificial; the pitch itself is hybrid grass, natural turf reinforced with synthetic fibers, installed by FLexGrass in 2024.

The 2020 earthquake in Zagreb cracked the eastern stand. It remains closed to spectators, which keeps the usable capacity well below the 38,079 figure sometimes quoted. The record attendance is 18,000, set in 1939 for a Yugoslavia versus Germany fixture.

The address is Maksimirska cesta 128 in the district that shares its name with the park surrounding the stadium. The stadium has hosted concerts and international matches, but its primary purpose has always been football.

There is no verified architect for the original structure, and no sponsor names were ever attached to the official title. The venue is managed by the city of Zagreb. The capacity varies between sources because different counting methods have been applied over the decades, not because the stadium has physically changed its layout. The eastern stand closure is the only permanent reduction in recent memory.
