Umuahia Township Stadium

Umuahia Township Stadium sits on a quiet stretch of the 10 Umuahia - Ikot Ekpene Road. The ground has watched Nigeria’s youth talent rise since the 1994 FIFA U-17 World Cup, when the final between Brazil and Germany decided the world’s next generation of players. That match remains the stadium’s most defining moment, a time when the natural grass pitch hosted a global audience.

Today, the Abia State Government owns the facility, which serves as the home for Abia Warriors F.C. and Abia Comets F.C. in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). The capacity remains modest at 5,000, but the scope of what this ground has hosted extends far beyond football. In April 2014, it filled with fans for a Star Music Trek concert featuring 2face Idibia and Olamide. More recently, in June 2025, the same pitch echoed with the voices of Davido and Timaya at another major concert. On May 29, 2023, the stadium fell silent as Governor Alex Otti was inaugurated, marking another chapter in its life as a civic centre.

The last decade has seen two major transformations. In 2018, under Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, the stadium underwent significant renovations to bring it up to modern standards. A further face-lift in 2023 funded by Governor Otti’s inauguration committee ensured the facilities matched the ambitions of the clubs that call it home. The surface remains natural grass, unchanged by the concrete work around it. Despite its unassuming location in the Umu Obasi district, the stadium has become a multi-purpose venue where local football meets national events, and where the past still overlaps with the present in unexpected ways.
