Utena Arena

The sharp orange panels on the Utena Arena do not look like they belong in a sports complex. They twist away from the central black section, creating a shape that recalls a folded piece of paper rather than a standard sports hall. Inside, the space serves basketball and concerts with equal indifference. The telescopic seating retreats to widen the floor when the ball leaves the court for a stage.

The Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) brought its crowds here when BC Juventus Utena hosted BC Žalgiris Kaunas in December 2017. That match pulled 3,128 spectators into the stands, a number that still sits at the top of the attendance figures. The team has carried the side through various competitions, including the Baltic Basketball League (BBL) before that circuit ended in 2018. When the BBL folded, the club looked toward the FIBA Champions League. They played group-stage games in the same season, filling the hall for European fixtures while the rest of the city watched the orange exterior sit against the sky.

The structure opened in 2009 after two years of work on a reinforced concrete floor. The surface does not change when the host switches from handball to volleyball, nor when a promoter sets up a concert hall. The capacity shifts depending on whether people stand for a fight or sit for a game. The building remains quiet between events, with the small trees in front providing little shelter from the weather. This is the only multi-purpose indoor sporting venue in the town.
