Valley Stadium

It is not the official name, but the locals still use it.

Charlton Athletic have called this ground home since 1919. They did not buy it; they built it. The club had no money, so volunteers dug out an old sand and chalk pit to make a level pitch. The earth they removed formed the original terraces. It has been known as The Valley ever since, through the war years and past the stadium closures.

The Valley Stand and the John Payne Stand now hold the crowd in an all-seater configuration. It sits on Floyd Road in the SE7 postcode, tucked away from the high street.

The ground has hosted rugby league clubs and charity matches, but it remains an English football ground at heart.
