VOLGA Arena

VOLGA Arena sits on the Strelka, the point where the Oka and Volga rivers meet in Nizhny Novgorod.

Inside, the air is kept cold by mechanical refrigeration, holding three separate surfaces of ice. The main rink has no perimeter fencing, a design choice that lets spectators sit close to the players and hear the skates cut into the ice. The seating rises at steep angles, acknowledging that this is a building for hockey in winter rather than a summer event space. HC Torpedo moved into this home from the older Sports Palace Nagorny. The arena opened in the spring of 2026 after a long construction period that saw the budget grow as material costs climbed. The first match inside was a contest against HC Ak Bars Kazan, kicked off with a multimedia show.

The ground outside is as much a part of the venue as the doors themselves. It is a stark contrast to the clean white lines of the arena’s facade. The building is not isolated; it shares the bank with other structures and sits close to the cathedral, making the whole area feel like a single, shifting block of history.
