Hockey Club Phocéen had carried the sport in the city since 1969, surviving a stretch from 1995 to 2009 with no team at all before folding into bankruptcy in April 2012, roughly €100,000 in debt. A successor was formed as Massilia Hockey Club in the same month, and in 2017 it became Marseille Hockey Club.
The club still plays at the Palais Omnisports Marseille Grand-Est, known locally as the Patinoire de la Capelette. Promotion to the Ligue Magnus arrived for the 2023–24 season, earned after the Spartiates won the Division 1 title in 2020–21 through a final-four playoff. Matches against the Paris region's Jokers de Cergy-Pontoise and Bisons de Neuilly-sur-Marne are known among supporters as the Glassico.
Luc Tardif Jr. took the team up as head coach and general manager, and the current squad is built around captain Teddy Da Costa and scorer Gennady Stolyarov, with Alexandre Texier training alongside the club in 2024. Éric Lagache has held the presidency and majority stake since 2022.
