Blyth Spartans hosted Hebburn Town in a Club Friendly on Saturday, losing 2-4 in a match that exposed the gulf between the two sides. The home side started brighter, taking the lead through L. Taylor in the sixth minute, but Hebburn responded quickly and never looked back. By the end of the game, the visitors had established themselves as the more capable outfit.
Taylor's early strike gave Blyth hope, but Hebburn's J. Charles equalised within fifteen minutes and then took the lead with a second goal in the twenty-eighth minute. The home side fought back through an unattributed goal at thirty-four, but Charles completed his hat-trick at fifty-six to put the tie beyond doubt. D. Moore added a fifth goal at eighty-two, ending any pretence of a comeback.
The statistics tell a similar story: Hebburn generated more attacks, eighty-three to seventy-one, and controlled possession at fifty-four per cent. They also won more corners, five to two, suggesting sustained pressure. Blyth had slightly more throw-ins but that did not translate into meaningful chances.
Hebburn's form has been unpredictable of late: three draws and two losses in their last five friendlies, including a 2-3 defeat by Hartlepool and a 2-2 draw with Morpeth Town. Blyth, meanwhile, have struggled to find consistency, losing four of their last five matches across all competitions.
The result does not mean much in terms of league standing — these are friendlies after all — but it gives Hebburn a chance to work on their attacking rhythm. Blyth will need to address the defensive frailties that allowed four goals in a space of seventy-six minutes.
