Opatija saw off Vukovar 1:0 in the First National League on Sunday evening. The hosts secured three points at home in round seven of the regular season, keeping their campaign alive despite a difficult run of form. The result leaves them a point behind their nearest rivals in the table.
By then, the match had settled into something you recognise from this level — tight, deliberate, decided by a single moment. I watched the whole ninety minutes and came back to the twentieth minute, when Opatija's midfield tried to stretch the back line and Vukovar held firm. To be fair, neither side created much, but the hosts had the sharper edge when it mattered.
The goal arrived late, at the eighty-seventh minute, after Vukovar had dallied on the ball in their own half. Opatija struck and saw it out, weathering the storm in the closing stages. Five yellow cards were shown — three for the hosts, two for the visitors — and the game never lost its tension.
The statistics tell a familiar story.
