Cláudio Araújo

Braga has produced its share of academy graduates who never make it past the reserve sides, but Cláudio Araújo's path ran through a longer list than most: Sporting Braga, Vilaverdense, Famalicão and then Gil Vicente's youth ranks before he found regular first-team football away from the big academies, at Varzim.

It was there, in the Portuguese third tier, that his 2024/25 season stood out. Araújo scored a dozen goals from midfield and added four assists across 32 appearances for Varzim, numbers that earned him recognition as Liga 3's best midfielder and breakthrough player of the season. Individual awards at that level rarely travel far, but his did: the form was enough to persuade Leixões to sign him, and he now plays for the club wearing the number 22 shirt.

He joined Varzim as a free agent in the summer of 2024, a move that turned out to be the making of his career so far. Before that, his development had been almost entirely behind the scenes, passing through academy sides without the individual attention his season at Varzim eventually brought him.

There is no senior or youth international recognition on his record yet, and no team trophies to point to. What Araújo has built instead is a reputation earned in one breakout campaign, the kind of season that clubs at Leixões' level look for when they go shopping in the lower divisions.
