About the player
Junior Sambia made his professional debut for Chamois Niortais in September 2014, at 18 years and five days old, becoming the youngest player ever to start a match for the club. He stayed at Niort until 2017, when Montpellier HSC signed him on loan with an option to buy; that option was exercised in July 2018 for a fee of €2.2 million, and Sambia went on to play for Montpellier until 2022.
In April 2020, while still at Montpellier, Sambia became the first player in Ligue 1 to test positive for COVID-19. He was hospitalised and placed in an artificial coma.
Sambia left Montpellier for Salernitana on a free transfer in July 2022. Two years later, in August 2024, he moved to Empoli on loan as part of a deal that also involved Petar Stojanović moving in the opposite direction. The loan ran for the 2024–25 season. After a period without a club, he signed for Clermont Foot in August 2026 on a one-year contract.
Born in Vaulx-en-Velin, near Lyon, Sambia came through the youth ranks at Lyon before continuing his development at Mâcon. He holds Central African Republic nationality and made his debut for the Central African Republic national team in 2026.
