O. Pineda

Chicago is the whole story with Mauricio Pineda. He joined the Chicago Fire Academy at the age of ten, and the youth side he came through led the club to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Championship in 2015. That grounding stayed with him through college, where he played for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, adding an All-ACC First Team selection along the way. He also spent time with Tobacco Road FC and North Carolina FC U23 in USL League Two before turning professional.

Chicago Fire signed him as a Homegrown Player, a deal that cost the club nothing in transfer fees and brought a local product straight back into the first team he had grown up around. His contract has since been extended more than once, most recently running through 2026 with an option for a further year, a sign of how central he has become to the club's plans. Pineda operates as a defensive midfielder or centre-back, and the versatility has kept him in the picture regardless of how the team is set up.

He was named Chicago Fire FC's Best Defensive Player in 2020, and was later included on the MLS 22 Under 22 list. At international level, he has earned two caps for the United States U-23 side. Across his time in MLS he has made over a hundred appearances for Chicago and scored six goals, output that reflects a player trusted with a settled role rather than one used sparingly off the bench.
