About the player
Phillip Tietz built his goalscoring reputation not at Augsburg but at Darmstadt 98. He scored 15 league goals in 2021–22 and 12 more the following season, part of a total of 27 goals in 68 league appearances for the club, and his form helped Darmstadt secure promotion to the Bundesliga.
Tietz came through the youth ranks at Eintracht Braunschweig and was promoted to Braunschweig's first team in 1996... rather in 2016 after two years with the reserve side. A free transfer took him to SC Paderborn 07 in January 2018, where he won the Westphalia Cup that season, before a loan spell at FC Carl Zeiss Jena during 2018–19. He then joined SV Wehen Wiesbaden on a free transfer in June 2019, winning the Hessen Cup with the club in 2020–21.
His move to Darmstadt in July 2021 proved the turning point, and the goals that followed persuaded FC Augsburg to sign him for around €2.5 million in July 2023. At Augsburg, Tietz has added 16 goals in 78 league appearances. Internationally, he represented Germany at U20 level, earning two caps in 2016.
In January 2026, Tietz's spell in Augsburg ended with a move to FSV Mainz 05, agreed for a fee of €4.0 million plus bonuses and a contract running until June 2028.
