Ghazi Stadium sits in Kabul with room for 25,000. The under-20 team draws on the same ground and the same colours as the senior side, red at home and white away, and carries the same nickname, the Lions of Khorasan.

The team's one real high point came early. At the 1977 AFC U20 Asian Cup, Afghanistan reached the quarter-finals. They had appeared in the finals the two years before, in 1975, and returned again in 1978.

More recently the age group has found a home closer to its own region.
