Makhachkala is the capital of Dagestan, and its historical name is Anzhi, a Kumyk word for "pearl". When a football club was formed in the city in 1991, it took that name. Its badge carries an eagle, so supporters call the team the Eagles, or the Yellow-Greens after the colours.
It won the First Division, the second tier, in 1999 and again in 2009, and was promoted to the top flight on both occasions. In between came a Russian Cup final in 2000–01, lost to Lokomotiv Moscow.
In 2011 the club came under the ownership of Suleyman Kerimov. Samuel Eto'o, Roberto Carlos, Willian and Yuri Zhirkov all played there. Guus Hiddink coached a side that finished third in the Russian Premier League in 2012–13 and reached another Cup final, this time losing to CSKA Moscow.
Kerimov reduced his funding in 2013. The team finished last in 2013–14, and financial trouble followed. Osman Kadiev took over as owner in 2016. In 2022 the club was dissolved over money problems and returned to amateur football.
Ali Gadjibekov, a product of the academy, played for the club from 2006 to 2016, so he was there through the Kerimov years and the collapse that followed. Anzhi's nearest opponent is Dynamo Makhachkala. Matches against Akhmat Grozny are known as the Caucasus derby.
The Anzhi Arena holds 26,500 and stands in Kaspiysk.
