In 2014 Atlético Melilla won the Primera Autonómica de Melilla, went up to the Tercera División, the fourth tier, and came straight back down. The 2014–15 season was enough to finish it. The club ceased activity in 2015.
The name did not stay dormant. In 2022 Atlético Melilla Club de Fútbol was set up as a refounding of that first club, and it went back to the same starting point, the regional league. This time the result held: the club won the Primera Autonómica de Melilla in 2022–23 and moved up to the Tercera Federación.
Behind the second attempt stands the owner, Mohand Amar Chaib, known as Biri. For the 2025–26 season the manager is Salah Amar. There are no academy graduates to point to yet, as the club is too young to have produced any.
The other side of the city's football is UD Melilla, and the fixture between the two is the Derbi Melillense. Atlético play in yellow and black, often in pinstripes or vertical stripes, and local media call the players los melillenses.
Home games are at the Campo Federativo La Espiguera.
