Berwick Rangers

In February 1967 Berwick Rangers beat Glasgow Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish Cup, with Jock Wallace playing and managing the side at the same time.

Berwick Rangers is the only English club ever admitted to the Scottish Football League, taken in during 1951 despite playing out of Berwick-upon-Tweed, on the English side of the border. That has not made for an easy existence. The club came close to bankruptcy in 1988/89 and again in 1991/92, and in 1985 it sold Shielfield Park and leased the ground back just to keep going; supporters and the local council helped buy that lease back between 1994 and 1996. A supporters' trust took formal control of the club between November 2008 and January 2009. None of that stopped relegation in May 2019, when Berwick Rangers dropped out of the SPFL into the Lowland League, only the second club to fall that far after East Stirlingshire. Rising energy prices and the loss of sponsors strained the finances again through 2023 and 2024.

The match against Gala Fairydean Rovers, known as the Borders Derby, still draws the sharpest local interest. Eric Tait played 435 games for the club between 1969 and 1988.

The club's own start is not entirely settled. Berwick Rangers dates itself to 1881, when Peter Coe gathered the players who would wear black and gold, though the earliest surviving records, and the first match on file, belong to 16 February 1884.
