Brasil de Pelotas

Alvariza wore the shirt of Brasil de Pelotas when he became the first player from Rio Grande do Sul called up to the Brazilian national team, and he later scored the winner against Chile at the 1920 South American Championship. Green and yellow were considered at first, a nod to Brazilian independence, but a local merchant offered a set of red and black in tribute to the Clube Diamantinos.

Brasil de Pelotas is the first champion the Campeonato Gaúcho ever crowned, beating Grêmio 5–1 in the 1919 final. In 1950 the club travelled to Montevideo and beat the Uruguay national team 2–1, a side stocked with players who would go on to win a World Cup. He died in a bus accident in 2009.

Brasil de Pelotas reached third place in the Campeonato Brasileiro in 1985 and came within a penalty shootout of the Série D title in 2014, losing it to Tombense after two goalless draws. The Baixada, built in 1943, can hold 18,000.
