Charlton Athletic U21

That traffic, from a training ground in New Eltham to the Premier League, is what the Under-21 set-up at Charlton Athletic is for.

The academy took its current shape in 1998. Since then the age group has played in the Professional Development League, mostly away from The Valley.

Before that restructuring, the old reserve teams won the Premier Reserve League South in 2003–04 and 2004–05. Further back, in 1986–87, Charlton's youth side reached the FA Youth Cup final and lost to Coventry City.

The production line has run further than Lookman and Gomez: Jermain Defoe, Scott Parker and Jonjo Shelvey all started at Charlton before moving on, and Lee Bowyer, who managed the first team, is also a product of the same system.
