Cirencester Town

The Southern League Division One South & West title of 2013–14 was Cirencester Town's clearest modern peak. Earlier generations had their own version of that success: the Hellenic League Premier Division in 1995–96, paired that same season with the Gloucestershire Senior Cup, and a first Hellenic League Division One crown back in 1973–74.

The Centurions, as they're known, took shape in Cirencester in October 1889, and for well over a hundred years played at Smithfield on Tetbury Road before the move across town to what is now the Corinium Stadium in 2002–03. The record attendance there still traces back to the old ground's era in one sense and not another — the 2,600 who watched them play Fareham Town came in 1969, at Smithfield rather than the current home.

John Brough's five years in charge, from 2019 to 2024, closed with a decision that said something about the club's priorities: sixth place in Southern League Division One Central in 2023–24 was followed not by another push upward but by voluntary relegation into the Hellenic League Premier Division, where they finished 15th the following season. Levi Irving's breakthrough in 2018–19 came through the academy set up with Cirencester College in 1996, a pipeline built for exactly that kind of graduate.

None of it has ever mattered more locally than the meetings with Swindon Supermarine, the A419 derby that gives the fixture list its sharpest edge each season, with Chippenham Town supplying the other rivalry worth circling on the calendar. Both are the kind of games that fill the 4,500-capacity Corinium Stadium's stands with a noise the rest of the season rarely matches.
