Deportivo Pasto

A journalist and sports promoter in San Juan de Pasto, Miguel Humberto López, known around town as "Milachell", pushed the club into being with backing from the brewer Bavaria. They called it Oro Rojo at first, before the name changed to Deportivo Pasto. The club spent its early decades on the semi-professional circuit in Nariño, and it took until 1977 for the departmental government to grant it professional status. Amateur football gave way to something the city could follow properly, though the step up to Colombia's top flight, Categoría Primera A, waited until the end of the 1990s.

The high point came in 2006, when Deportivo Pasto won the Torneo Apertura for their only Categoría Primera A title. Carlos Daniel Hidalgo was central to that side and to the club generally — he is the top scorer in its history with 60 goals, and he kept coming back, joining and rejoining the squad across several spells between 2002 and 2023. Two other appearances at the final stayed out of reach: Copa Colombia runner-up finishes in 2009, lost on penalties to Independiente Santa Fe, and in 2012 against Atlético Nacional.

The club plays in white, red and green, which earned it the nickname El Tricolor, though supporters more often call the team Los Volcánicos — a nod to the volcanic country around Pasto. Matches against América de Cali carry some extra weight in the south of the country, without ever being formalised as a named derby. Home games are played at the Estadio Departamental Libertad, which holds 20,000.
