Whoever Dundee United's second string face on a given weekend owes more to whatever development football throws up than to any settled grudge. One week it might be Clachnacuddin, still drawn from the amateur ranks of the Highland League; the next, Dunfermline Athletic B, another club's reserves playing the same kind of fixture. The competition itself has changed its name almost as often as its opponents change — the SPFL Challenge Cup, the KDM Evolution Trophy, now the Cinch Reserve League — and none of it carries the weight of a derby.

Home games are played at Tannadice Park, the ground the first team also uses, with a capacity of 14,209.

The shirt is tangerine and black, the colours Dundee United have worn since 1969.

There was a spell, in the late 1980s, when the reserves were hard to beat: the Scottish Premier Reserve League title in three straight seasons, 1987-88 through 1989-90, with further East league and Reserve League Cup wins either side of it. Since the competition returned in its present format in 2018, that run hasn't been matched — no title since the restart.
