Three saved penalties settled it: Mohamed Bassam kept out one Al Ahly kick after another as the 2020-21 Egyptian Super Cup went to a shootout following a goalless ninety minutes. El Geish won it 3-2, the club's only major trophy.
Those near misses came in the Egypt Cup, where El Geish reached the final three times, in 2013, 2018 and 2019. Al Ahly beat them again in 2019, a 1-1 draw settled on penalties in the Cairo side's favour.
The Egyptian Armed Forces raised the club in 1997 as Al-Jaish Al-Masry, and it carried that name until the 2004-05 season, when it became Tala'ea El Geish — Army Vanguard.
Playing in yellow and black, El Geish share their military lineage with clubs such as Haras El Hodoud and ENPPI. Ahmed Eid Abdel Malek played two seasons in the club's midfield, from 2015 to 2017, having already won the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt in 2006 and 2010.
