Enyimba

The Enyimba International Stadium in Aba holds 16,000, and on the nights the ground fills for the Oriental Derby against Enugu Rangers, the noise has a way of settling any nerves in the home dressing room before kick-off. It has been the club's fortress through most of its history, the place where the elephant, as the nickname has it, the People's Elephant, is meant to trample visitors rather than the other way round.

Jerry Amadi Enyeazu set the club up in November 1976, while serving as the first Director for Sports in what was then Imo State, before Abia State was carved out in 1991. The name comes from the Igbo word for elephant, and for a stretch in the early 2000s the club lived up to it. Nine Nigerian Premier League titles have followed since that first one in 2001, along with four Federation Cup wins between 2005 and 2014, but the run that still gets talked about is the back-to-back CAF Champions League triumphs of 2003 and 2004.

That side had Vincent Enyeama between the posts, who was named the competition's Player of the Year in 2004 before going on to a long career in Europe, and it fed a production line that later sent Victor Obinna to Inter Milan. Kalu Uche came through the same academy system. Continental pedigree showed again in 2023, when a domestic title was paired with a run to the CAF Confederation Cup final, lost to RS Berkane.

Beyond the Oriental Derby, there is the Abia Derby against Abia Warriors, a fixture with no love lost given the shared state and the name both clubs stake a claim to. The 2023 league crown was the most recent addition to a cabinet that already set Enyimba apart domestically, and the club now goes into each new campaign expected to challenge again rather than simply take part.
