Germany's under-17 women have won the European Championship nine times, and the first title came in 2008 with Alexandra Popp in the side. She scored 17 goals in 25 appearances for the age group between 2006 and 2008. The same year the team finished third at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, and eight appearances there, the last in 2024, have not bettered it.

Europe has been where the team wins. The 2008 title was followed by another in 2009, and the pair was repeated in 2016 and 2017. In between came 2012, 2014 and 2019.

The side began in 1992 as an under-16 team under the German Football Association (DFB). Its first match was played on 14 June 1992 in Borghorst, a 3:0 win over Norway. The age limit went up to 17 in the summer of 2001.

In June 2022 the team moved its training to the newly opened DFB-Campus on Kennedyallee in Frankfurt am Main, which has three and a half natural grass pitches and an indoor hall. The ninth followed in 2026.
